Carrying your baby in a wrap

Babies love and need to be held. Carrying your baby in a baby wrap like the CuddlyWrap™ promotes health and optimal development. Here are a few reasons why babies love to spend time in the comfort of baby wraps:

  • baby is more relaxed and content; feels secure and therefore cries less
  • enhances motor skills and coordination by stimulating baby’s sense of balance
  • promotes a quiet, alert state and energizes baby’s nervous system
  • stimulates baby’s brain development and cognitive learning
  • helps baby settle into sleep more quickly
  • carried babies often sleep more deeply and for longer periods of time.

Wearing your baby is incredibly helpful in integrating your baby into your daily life. Not only is it practical to wear your baby but it is wonderfully reassuring to know that you are providing the richest and most beneficial environment that you possibly can.  There is a wonderful variety of baby carriers (including sling baby carriers, pouch baby slings, buckle and soft backpack carriers).  Many carriers can be used for different carrying positions which will accomodate children as they grow.  Many carriers can be used up to 35 or even 45 lbs which increases their versatility.

Babywearing has become a wonderful trend.  It keeps moms and dads close to their children and growing together!  The benefits of keeping your baby close during those first impressionable years is becoming very well-recognized!  Some of the benefits include:

Less Crying - Babies who are carried cry less than those that are not.  Research has shown that babies who are worn or carried cry an average of 43% less overall and 54% less during the evening (1).

Smarter Babies - Babies spend more time in a “quiet, alert state” when carried - the ideal state for learning. When carried, your baby sees the world from where you do. This stimulation benefits brain development.

Emotional Development - Babies develop a sense of security and trust when they are carried. They are more likely to be securely attached to their care-giver/s (2) and often become independent at an earlier age (3).  When babies are worn in baby slings they are right there for their caregivers to enjoy whenever they feel like snuggling, kissing or talking.

Physical Development - Research has shown that by being close to your body’s rhythms (heart beat, respiratory rate, warmth, sound of your voice) newborns (especially premature babies) are able to adapt to life outside the womb (4).

Eases the strain - Carrying your baby in a sling eases the strain on babies’ spine and your back.

There is one thing you can count on–children grow quickly.  There is this window of opportunity to hold your child.  In fact, attachment researchers agree that a baby’s emotional, cognitive and physiological systems function optimally with the continued presence of the mother.  When a child is worn in a baby carrier the continued presence of the mother is a regulating influence.  So the best thing for your baby is also the most convenient for mother.  Fortunately, wearing your baby is gaining in popularity which has spawned many wonderful babywearing products.  So be it baby ring slings, pouches, or buckle carriers you can wear your baby in the front, hip or back and know you are doing something wonderful for your baby.

Combining Safety and Comfort

ergonomic baby carriers

Finding a safe and secure way to transport your baby is an important decision for any parent. Not only is it important for the baby to be comfy, but you should be comfortable as well. Ergonomic baby carriers are specifically designed to maximize comfort for you and your baby while maintaining the highest standards of safety.

Ergonomics is the science of designing equipment and tools to properly fit the user. Products that are ergonomically designed prevent injury and excess strain during use. With an ergonomically designed baby carrier, wearing your child will feel natural, like the product was your own kangaroo pouch.

Parents realize that the early months in an infant’s brain development represent a window of opportunity for cognitive stimulation.  They  often search for the best ways to take advantage of this.  Well, the best stimulation is right in front of them.  It’s babywearing.  Babywearing is the practice of wearing your baby on your chest, hip or back in a fabric baby wrap carrier.  The stimulation baby gets is as follows:  he hears what you hear, sees what you see, moves like you move.  You are more in touch with his or her needs.  Your respond to your baby more.  The more words a baby hears especially from you the more brain connections are made.  You are providing your baby the best by wearing him or her.

It’s more than a baby carrier

It is more than a baby carrier.  It is more than an image of a child who is peacefully snuggled against their parent.  It is a blink in time, a moment you will never get back.  It is the smell of your skin close to your child. It is the moment your baby looks up and slowly closes his eyes and drifts off to sleep.  It is the ability to fold laundry, trim flowers, go to the market as your baby is happy and close to you.

It is the strolls down old cobblestone streets, across open fields and busy cities.  It is the security of knowing, feeling, touching your child.  Knowing that you can not look away or just a split second and them be gone, because he is part of you, connected, bonded and secure.

It is what every parent wants–security of knowing what they are doing is the best, most safe, and healthiest thing for their baby.
