If you are a first time babywearer you might be trying to figure out which baby carrier is right for you.  Well, each one has its advantages and disadvantages.  Here’s a brief description.  Baby carriers or baby slings like the Original Maya Wrap or the Hotsling are one-shoulder carriers.  Newborns and young infants are usually carried in a cradled position.  But you can also use it to carry an older infant or toddler on the hip.  The Original Maya Wrap has “wrap” in the name but it is a one-shouldered carrier and therefore it functions as a sling.  It has rings that allow for easy adjusting and a long fabric tail that can be used as a cover up for nursing.  It is easy to nurse in.  Stretchy wraps, such as the Moby Wrap or Cuddly Wrap, use both shoulders.  This provides great comfort and support for both wearer and child.  It distributes the child’s weight evenly across the wearer’s back.  They are easy for beginners.  There is only one tying method.  They are great for newborns and infants.  You can carry your child in the front–either reclining, upright, facing in, facing out or side-sitting.  Not recommended for carrying on the back.  Back Carriers such as the Mei Tai (pronounced “may tie”) are asian-style back carriers.  The child’s weight is supported by both shoulders and one’s hips.  It can be used to carry a child newborn to 3 years in either the front or back position.  Some people find it more difficult to carry very young infants, less than 4-5 months old.
